One Piece renewed for Season 2 at Netflix

Just two weeks after its premiere, Netflix has renewed the live-action adaptation of One Piece for Season 2. Manga creator and illustrator Eiichiro Oda announced the news in a video to fans, enlisting the Transponder Snail to help spread the word.

“What did you think of Season 1 of the live-action One Piece?” Oda said. “I spent a long time working on it with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios. It seems people around the world have been enjoying the show, which makes the hard work from the production team truly worth it.” Revealing that he’s received the green light for a sequel, the illustrator added,

“The adventures of Iñaki and the live-action Straw Hats will continue onward! It’ll still take a while to get the scripts ready, so please be patient. From here on, it seems to me the Straw Hats will need a great doctor… We will see!”

While Netflix’s version of One Piece marks the first live-action edition the franchise, the long-running manga has inspired a ton of spinoffs since its 1999 premiere, including an anime adaptation, books, theme park attractions, video games, plays, and 15 theatrical films. In the latest series, Iñaki Godoy stars as Monkey D. Luffy, the adventurer searching for the titular One Piece treasure that will cement him as King of the Pirates.

Additionally, Mackenyu portrays Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd plays Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson tackles Usopp, and Taz Skylar rounds out the cast as Sanji. Matt Owens and Steven Maeda serve as writers, executive producers, and showrunners, while Eiichiro Oda, Marty Adelstein, and Becky Clements executive produce.

In the wake of the swiftly canceled Cowboy Bebop, Netflix can count One Piece as an anime adaptation success story. In its debut weekend, the series was No.1 in viewership in 84 countries, surpassing previous records set by by Stranger Things and Wednesday.
