Just a few days before he’ll join SZA on tour, Omar Apollo has dropped a new track. This one is called “3 Boys” and sees the singer embrace romance while reflecting on what it would be like to eschew the norms of a traditional relationship.
Singing over a simple punchy beat accentuated by guitar, Apollo croons about feeling “tethered” to one boy and in turn, not being able to open his heart up to anyone else.
“When I first started writing songs I would often write about unrequited love,” he said about the track. “Eventually I wrote songs about the complexities that come with a relationship. “3 Boys” was my first time writing about something non-monogamous. Having more than one person to talk to.”
Apollo wrote the song while in London with help from friends Dylan Wiggins and Mustafa, describing that it came together quickly.
“It seemed like we were both in the same mind state for a song like this,” he said of working with Wiggins.
“3 Boys” is the first new music fans have heard from Apollo following last year’s Ivory LP. The singer will be heading on SZA’s SOS tour beginning February 21 in Columbus, Ohio.
