Olivia Rodrigo’s luxury designer style, from Y2K to Barbiecore

Olivia Rodrigo’s luxury designer style, from Y2K to Barbiecore

Olivia Rodrigo is entering her Guts era and it shows – not just through her music, but also her fashion.

With her latest album receiving critical acclaim and already climbing the charts since it came out on September 8, with a world tour set to kick off in 2024, Rodrigo is believed to have entered a new style era to coincide with her pop princess vibe – and she’s bringing her favourite designers with her.

Here’s a look inside the noughties fashionista’s ever-expanding luxury wardrobe and style lately.

Y2K queen

The 20-year-old seems to love Y2k fashion the most, sporting everything from choker pendants and Dr. Martens boots to butterfly hair clips. For her interview at SiriusXM Studios in July, the grunge goddess wore a black cropped jumper with a microskirt, complete with US$775 black nappa Mary Jane heels from Jimmy Choo.

Later, the “Vampire” singer attended the 2023 Billboard Women in Music Awards, where she presented Lana Del Rey with an award while wearing a horse-inspired pair of flared trousers from a Stella McCartney-era spring 2001 collection from Chloé, as reported by Vogue.

Then, earlier this month, Rodrigo shone in a butterfly-embellished sequin dress from Dua Lipa’s Versace collection, which Lipa co-designed with Donatella herself, per Cosmopolitan.

Rodrigo channels her inner diva with plenty of glitter and sparkles. At the recent VMAs this September, the “Bad Idea Right?” songstress stunned in a floor-length custom silver gown from Ludovic de Saint Sernin, a Paris-based brand loved by Shakira and Hailey Bieber.

The dress was made from 150,000 Swarovski crystals, according to Rodrigo’s stylist Danielle Goldberg. She paired the look with matching Roger Vivier platforms.

In February, the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series actress opted for a shining LBD with a keyhole cut-out at the front for the Grammys after-party. The dress was from 16Arlington.

Rodrigo has also twinkled in looks from Versace and De Beers Jewellers bling at the Met Gala last year, to a custom Dior haute couture outfit at the 2021 Brit Awards and a black Saint Laurent dress at an Art Basel event that same year.

At the Grammys event this year, Rodrigo showed off her daring side by wearing a bare-all black slip dress from Miu Miu. She had a black bralette and hot shorts underneath the sheer piece, and accessorised her ‘fit with Tiffany & Co. jewellery.

She continued to bring her edgy style with a lace floral Gucci autumn 2023 dress for her photoshoot with The Guardian Saturday. She donned another all-black dress from Marc Jacobs for the same publication.

For a Spotify promo, Rodrigo turned heads in another black lace piece, this time a bodysuit from YSL’s vintage 2002 Tom Ford collection.

Rodrigo has worn head-to-toe pink on multiple occasions, but her most recent outing includes her Acne Studios draped dress with By Far heels during her The Guardian Saturday photoshoot this September.

Vintage

It’s clear that Rodrigo’s fashion is much inspired by archives. From her vintage 1994 Chanel sequinned V-neck plunge dress in May to a cropped gold shimmering miniskirt from Todd Oldham’s spring/summer 1995 collection, the “Driver’s License” talent is no stranger to retro looks.

For a Guts gallery event in NYC this month, she chose a floral vintage 90s slip dress from Betsey Johnson.

Skater girl

Rodrigo’s music combines pop and rock elements, bringing a nostalgic vibe that can be compared to 2000s punk princesses like Avril Lavigne and Hayley Williams from Paramore.

Yet this songstress channels a wardrobe that melds femininity and “skater girl”. For her recent VMAs performance, she wore a custom two-piece bra and miniskirt from Sandy Liang, complete with Converse’s Chuck Taylor All Stars.
