NSX Predecessor: The Honda HP-X to Make U.S. Debut at Pebble Beach

Honda‘s eye-catching HP-X Concept car will make its North American debut at the fast-approaching 2024 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Initially revealed at the 1984 Turin Auto Show, the HP-X signaled Honda’s ambition to create a mid-engine supercar, a dream later realized through the NSX.

The Honda HP-X (Honda Pininfarina eXperimental) Concept, a product of legendary Italian design firm Pininfarina, boasts a dramatic wedge profile and a fighter-jet-inspired cockpit. This appearance marks the first time a Japanese vehicle has been featured at the Pebble Beach Concours in over 50 years.

Dave Marek, Acura design executive and honorary Pebble Beach Concours judge stated “The Honda HP-X Concept was the star of the 1984 Turin Auto Show. Its extreme wedge-shape styling and engineering excellence continue to inspire future generations of car designers and engineers.”

The HP-X features advanced aerodynamics, including ground effects and innovative cooling solutions for its mid-mounted 2.0L DOHC 24-valve V6 engine, based on a Honda F2 racing engine. The concept’s jet-fighter style removable single-piece Perspex canopy and use of alternative materials like honeycomb panels, carbon fiber and Kevlar, highlight its futuristic design.

Inside, the HP-X explored new levels of comfort and functionality with a Honda-developed “Electronic Drive Support System,” previewing technologies like real-time telemetry, GPS and road condition warnings.

“The HP-X is a testament to Honda’s and Pininfarina’s innovative spirit,” said Felix Kilbertus, Pininfarina’s chief creative officer, adding “Its influence on subsequent Honda models and the broader automotive landscape is undeniable.”

After an extensive restoration at Pininfarina’s workshop in Italy, the HP-X will compete in the “Wedge-Shaped Concept Cars and Prototypes” class at the 73rd Annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 18, 2024.
