Nicki Minaj surprised fans with the trailer of her upcoming documentary.
Aptly titled Nicki, the six-part docu is produced by Bron Studios and opens with a short clip of the young artist showing off her rap skills. She then goes on to narrate how she needed to learn to become famous on her own, and that her early career is “for the girls who never thought they could win” as female rappers were not talked about during her rise. Minaj adds that she never wanted to achieve mainstream success — it came to her, and that she does not receive the same respect as male rappers do.
“This industry is just not a loving, supportive place. They pretend sometimes, but it’s just not,” she admits in the trailer. Clips of her performing on big stages and broken up by behind-the-scenes look at her exhaustion and a health issue, but she notes that music is what keeps her sane as she learned to be strong despite the adversaries.
“Coming out SOONER THANK YOU THINK,” Minaj wrote on Instagram. “I took some time to perfect this very intimate, delicate, electrifying, inspiring body of work. As I decide on a home for this project, I can’t help but reflect on what I’m including in this doc. Some things are so personal, it’s scary. It’s like NOTHING you’ve seen before & I need it to be handled with care. Love you so much. Thank you for the continued support.”
