Newcastle takeover ‘close’ as EPL fail to block £300 million Saudi deal

Newcastle takeover ‘close’ as EPL fail to block £300 million Saudi deal

Newcastle’s takeover is on the brink of being completed as the Premier League failed to find any reason to block the prospective takeover.

According to a report in Football Insider, which claims the league has now fully investigated allegations linking the Saudi government to illegal streaming services.

Amanda Staveley’s consortium – backed by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund – is close to taking control of the club from Mike Ashley.

The deal has been in the pipeline for some time now, with Magpies fans desperate for a conclusion ahead of the summer transfer window.

Newcastle are set to spend big in the summer transfer window, and have already been linked with a host of big-name players.

And the Premier League has apparently found no reason to block the takeover after the investigation.

The government has insisted it won’t be intervening in the Premier League’s investigation, meaning the takeover could be announced imminently.

Speculation suggests Newcastle will part ways with Steve Bruce once the deal is done, with Mauricio Pochettino being lined up as a replacement.

Bruce is yet to comment on the takeover, but discussed the club’s upcoming return to training.

He insisted the first-team squad are desperate to return as soon as it is safe, and explained the measures the team will be taking to combat the virus.

Bruce said: “It’s been a really difficult time, but I hope with the news that phase one is about to start – and I must stress that phase one looks as if it’s as safe as it can be – I’m sure everyone will be delighted that we’re trying to make that effort.

“In phase one we’re allowed to train four to five people on one pitch, so basically a player has a quarter of a pitch to work within, so social distancing is not a problem.

“We’ll train with 8-10 at a time on two separate pitches.”
