New PS5 Teardown Shows Cheaper Internals, Despite Price Increase

At the end of last month, Sony began selling an updated version of the PlayStation 5, expected to hit Japan September 15 and the rest of the world at a later date, the CFI-1200 PS5 features a significant weight drop. The sale of the new console came shortly after the company announced a price increase for the PS5 set to hit much of the world due to global inflation.

Thanks to a teardown of the new CFI-1200 Sony PlayStation 5 by YouTuber Austin Evans, we learn that the console is more efficient with an estimated 10 percent reduced power consumption. Sony was able to achieve the feat with a smaller heatsink, reworked motherboard, and shrunken internal packaging, though the PS5 delivers roughly the same noise and heat output.

Evans theorizes that consumers will be paying less for electricity for running the CFI-1200 PS5, but Sony is ultimately manufacturing a cheaper machine.
