Shortly after releasing a trailer teasing the involvement of the Illuminati, Marvel Studios releases another Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness featurette ahead of the film’s premiere next week.
Titled “Wanda Returns,” the featurette focuses on Elizabeth Olsen‘s powerful Wanda Maximoff character, otherwise known as the Scarlet Witch. “Part of the madness of the multiverse is we get to see different realities, and we see different versions, primarily of Doctor Strange, but we do see other versions of Wanda Maximoff,” says producer Kevin Feige in the trailer. Since Wanda’s debut performance in Avengers: Age of Ultron, her power has only grown, and the upcoming sequel will likely showcase the extent of her powers within the infinite possibilities of the Multiverse.
While flashing to clips from WandaVision, a sitcom-style Disney+ miniseries released in 2021 featuring Wanda and Vision as a married couple with two children, Olsen explains the continuity in the upcoming narrative. “I think WandaVision was this journey of her, for the first time, taking her own life into her own hands, and it was fun transitioning from her experience to this movie,” she says. “We wanted to satisfy the WandaVision fans and take them to the next level with a character they love,” director Sam Raimi added. Raimi further states that in the Multiverse, there are alternate versions of everyone, and hints at the possibility of Wanda also meeting another version of herself.
While the X-Men franchise previously was kept away from the MCU due to copyright issues, Disney‘s acquisition of 20th Century Fox now opens the door for any and all crossovers. Marvel Studios’ WandaVision was the first major turning point and it’s rumored that Professor X may appear in the upcoming film, though it’s yet to be confirmed.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premieres in theaters on May 6th.
