Netflix is chronicling the creation of Spotify in a forthcoming limited series entitled The Playlist. Premiering on October 13, the six-episode run will offer a loose telling of Spotify’s launch in Sweden and how it came to be the top music streaming service in the world.
“In this fictionalized account, a Swedish tech entrepreneur and his partners set out to revolutionize the music industry with a legal streaming platform,” Netflix describes the series.
Vikings actor Edvin Endre will portray Spotify’s co-founder and CEO, Daniel Ek, while Christian Hillborg will play Ek’s friend and co-founder of Spotify, Martin Lorentzon.
Additional cast members include Gizem Erdogan portraying lawyer and longtime Spotify employee Petra Hansson, and Joel Lützow as Spotify’s CTO, Andreas Ehn.
A trailer for The Playlist offers a glimpse into Ek’s idea to launch the “first legal streaming service” and the pushback he encountered from record companies.
“Nobody will sign a deal that involves free music,” one man tells Ek in a voiceover.
