Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Trailer Sees Monkey D. Luffy Hunt for Hidden Treasure

Netflix's 'One Piece' Trailer Sees Monkey D. Luffy Hunt for Hidden Treasure

Netflix has pulled back the curtain on the official trailer for its live-action series, One Piece. Coming August 31, the show is set to adapt the fan-favorite manga of the same moniker, from Eiichiro Oda.

The series follows Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), a boy who possesses an elastic body, as he hunts for a hidden treasure known as “One Piece,” alongside a squad named the Straw Hat Pirates. Luffy swears that he and his team will uncover the elusive prize, which has the power to name him the Pirate King, in the Grand Line, “a treacherous stretch of ocean with bigger islands and bigger pirates.”

The freshly-minted trailer features a slew of action scenes, filled with daring adventurous, fantasy-inspired sequences and comic relief. Notably, One Piece, which already exists as an anime series, boasts a cult following that will likely bolster the Netflix live-action series’ popularity.

Alongside Godoy, the series stars Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp and Taz Skylar as Sanji.

In tandem with the trailer’s debut, Oda released a statement regarding the show’s syncing with the original manga. “There were no compromises on this show!” he said, adding that he requested several scenes be re-done because he “felt they weren’t good enough to be put out into the world.”

He added, “There were also some lines that I thought didn’t feel like Luffy on paper…But when I saw the filmed scenes, I went, ‘It works when it’s Iñaki performing it!’”
