Netflix has announced an upcoming reality competition series based on its hit 2021 South Korean series Squid Game. The 10-episode show, titled Squid Game: The Challenge, will be “the biggest reality competition series ever,” according to the streamer.
The series will see 456 real players compete through a variety of challenges inspired by the original show for a $4.56 million USD cash prize, the largest in reality TV history, per Netflix. The series will also include “surprising new additions” to fan-favorite Squid Game challenges, which will put players’ strategies, alliances and characters to the test.
“Squid Game took the world by storm with Director Hwang’s captivating story and iconic imagery. We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment,” said Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s vice president of unscripted and documentary series, in a statement. “Fans of the drama series are in for a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real-world contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever, full of tension and twists, with the biggest ever cash prize at the end.”
Netflix is actively recruiting players for Squid Game: The Challenge on the show’s official website. The streamer notes that for “this round,” casting directors are searching for English-language speakers from across the globe.
