When it comes to male pregnancy, the West had Junior and the East had Eri Sakai’s manga Kentarō Hiyama’s First Pregnancy (Hiyama Kentarō no Ninshin). Both are comedies and deal with opposite-sex childbearing, but this is where the similarities end.
Netflix has just revealed the trailer for the live-action remake of the manga titled He’s Expecting. The story revolves around Kentarō Hiyama — played by Takumi Saitō — where, in a world where males have a 1/10 chance of becoming pregnant without human intervention, Kentarō Hiyama must deal with his newly changed life as a salaryman, especially since male pregnancy is stigmatized. Along with his wife Aki Seto — played by Juri Ueno — they must face the event together while making friends in similar situations along the way.
Due to the mature and complex themes in the manga, it was never carried over to other languages and remained in Japan as a single volume by Kodansha. Check out the trailer above and expect He’s Expecting to release on Netflix globally on April 21.
