Netflix has unveiled the first official trailer for The Witcher season 2, following its announcement that the show will return to the streaming platform on December 17, during its inaugural WitcherCon event.
In June, Netflix shared a short, 10-second clip introducing the upcoming season, though details on what to expect from the upcoming installment were sparse. Now, this latest trailer provides a substantial look at the plot’s continuation on the fantasy drama series, focusing primarily on Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) and the exiled Princess Cirilla’s long-awaited union and their fearful quest for safety at Kaer Morhen, the stronghold of the Witchers.
“At the end of Season 1, we have what I think is one of the sort of most emotional scenes that we’ve done, which is Geralt and Ciri finding each other after they’ve both been searching all season… And it seems like we’ve got a father figure and daughter figure, and everything’s going to be perfect at that point, except for they’ve never met,” says showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich in a statement.
“And so it was really fun to start Season 2 thinking about, well, they’re not a family yet,” she added. “How do they grow to be one? What do you do if you are a person like Geralt, who has sworn he doesn’t need anyone in the world whatsoever? And then he’s presented with a girl who is now solely in his care.”
In addition to the trailer, Netflix also shared a release date for the upcoming animated prequel film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, during WitcherCon, announcing that it will land on the streaming platform on August 23. A next-generation PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will also become available for free later this year.
