Neil Gaiman breaks silence on sexual assault allegations: "I don't accept there was any abuse"

In a post published to his personal blog, Neil Gaiman has broken his silence on a series of sexual assault allegations dating back to last summer, unequivocally denying that there was any abuse.

“I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever,” the British author wrote, though he admitted to being “emotionally unavailable while being sexually available, self-focused, and not as thoughtful as I could or should have been.”

He continued, “I’m learning, and I’m trying to do the work needed, and I know that that’s not an overnight process. I hope that with the help of good people, I’ll continue to grow. I understand that not everyone will believe me or even care what I say but I’ll be doing the work anyway, for myself, my family, and the people I love. I will be doing my very best to deserve their trust, as well as the trust of my readers.”

That being said, Gaiman is adamant his previous actions are being mischaracterized. “I don’t accept there was any abuse,” he said. “I’m not willing to turn my back on the truth, and I can’t accept being described as someone I am not, and cannot and will not admit to doing things I didn’t do.”

Last July, Tortoise Media published an extensive investigation revealing Gaiman had been accused of sexual assault by two separate women and followed up with a podcast detailing the allegations of five total women.

On Monday, New York magazine published a cover story featuring interviews with four of those five women, plus “four others whose stories share elements with theirs.” These included a former babysitter for Gaiman and his ex-wife Amanda Palmer’s child, a fan who first met the author when she was 18, and a woman who accuses him of attempting to sexually assault her on his tour bus.

Several of Gaiman’s film and TV projects have been impacted by the allegations. Season 3 of Prime Video’s Good Omens will now end with one 90-minute episode, while Disney has paused development on a film adaptation of The Graveyard Book.

However, Season 2 of The Sandman is still expected to premiere on Netflix this year.
