National Diabetes Month: Your Health, Your Community

National Diabetes Month: Your Health, Your Community

Town Square Glows Blue

As we observe National Diabetes Month this November, it’s important to remember that access to healthcare is crucial in managing and preventing this widespread condition. With over 37 million Americans living with diabetes, community efforts are key to turning the tide against this disease.

To draw attention to the effort, the southwest Town Square arch will be lit blue, the global symbol for diabetes, to remind us of the unity and support within the diabetes community.

St John’s Health Healthy Living Fest: Focused on Accessibility and Prevention

An integral part of this month’s events is the Healthy Living Fest, scheduled for Saturday, November 11, 2023, from 9 am to 1 pm at the Teton County/Jackson Recreation Center gymnasium. It’s an event designed for those uninsured, underinsured, or who find it challenging to access healthcare services.

Here’s what the Healthy Living Fest has to offer:

  • Free Preventative Screenings: A chance to meet with healthcare providers for essential health screenings at no cost, helping you understand your current health status.
  • Follow-up Appointments: Information will be available for scheduling follow-up appointments with healthcare providers.
  • Local Health Resources: Participants can explore options for financial assistance for care and find local support for both medical and complementary health services.
  • Additional Support Services: For families attending, child care will be provided, as well as Spanish interpretation services, ensuring the event is accessible to everyone.

This initiative is organized by Teton County Health Department, St. John’s Health, Teton Free Clinic, and Voices JH, with the support of local healthcare providers and social service organizations.

Registration Details:

  • Price: Free
  • Registration Instructions: None required. Walk-ins are welcome.

Prevention and Proactive Steps

In line with this year’s theme, “Take Charge of Tomorrow – Preventing Diabetes Health Problems,” the Healthy Living Fest is a prime opportunity for taking those first, crucial steps toward a healthier future. Managing blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol through lifestyle changes and medication adherence is vital.

Mental health resources, guidance on maintaining a healthy weight, and support for tobacco cessation are also part of comprehensive diabetes management. And remember, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, support groups and mental health professionals can provide assistance.
