Natalie Portman gets caught in Julianne Moore’s twisted psyche in May December trailer: Watch

Netflix has shared the official trailer for the upcoming movie, May December. Directed by Todd Haynes, the film stars Natalie Portman as an actress who gets entwined in the tense, twisted world of the real-life subject she’s preparing to portray. Watch the trailer ahead of its December 1st premiere below.

Loosely based on the true story of Mary Kay Letourneau — the convicted child rapist who went on to marry and birth two children with her victim — May December follows Portman’s character as she prepares to play a woman (Julianne Moore) who began an affair with a 7th grader, and then eventually married him. Years removed from when their controversial “romance” caused a stir in the headlines, the couple welcomes Portman into their home, hoping to help her “tell the story right” for a movie about the affair.

But as the trailer shows us, the serenity of the couples’ now-stable lives is actually covering up a tempest of tension beneath the surface. As Portman digs into their story, and develops a relationship with Moore’s now-adult husband (Charles Melton), things begin to unravel, spurring a complicated reappraisal of everything. Check out the trailer below.

Details for May December were first shared in 2021, when it was announced that Portman and Moore had signed on for the project. The film first premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, and will open the New York Film Festival this Friday, September 29th. I’ll then begin showing in select theaters across North America on November 17th, and will finally hit Netflix for streaming on December 1st.

May December is the first title from Haynes since his 2021 documentary, The Velvet Underground. Moore, meanwhile, recently starred in the A24 mystery film, Sharper. As for Portman, this marks one of her first projects since filming for her Apple TV+ series, Lady in the Lake, was halted after a pair of reported drug dealers threatened a crew member at gunpoint and demanded $50,000.
