According to German newspaper Bild, Whittaker, who passed away on 13 September in a hospital in southern France, had recently suffered a stroke from which he never recovered.
The publication said: “The singer’s health had been poor for a long time. He suffered from heart problems and blocked arteries. He also had problems with his legs and stomach and suffered from multiple aneurysms. As a result, he had to undergo surgery several times.”
Much loved in Kenya for his song ‘My Land Is Kenya’, Whittaker, whose career spanned 40 years, was also behind other top hits like ‘The Last Farewell’, ‘Durham Town’ and ‘New World in the Morning’.
Released in 1982, ‘My Land is Kenya’ is a heartfelt tribute to the East African country. Whittaker was born on 22 March 1936 in Nairobi, Kenya, to British parents. His father was a trader running a successful grocery business, while his mother worked as a teacher, leaving Roger and his sister, Betty, in the care of African nannies who taught them Swahili.
Whittaker learnt to play the guitar at an early age after being gifted one by an Italian prisoner of war. He was also able to sing in German and French and was recognised for his whistling skills, as can be heard on ‘My Land Is Kenya’.
The artist, who sold more than 50 million records, is survived by his wife, Natalie, whom he married in 1964, and their five children.
