Post-rock favorites Mogwai are back to announce their new album, The Bad Fire, releasing everywhere on January 24th, 2025. The band has also shared a new song called “Lion Rumpus.”
The Bad Fire follows Mogwai’s 2021 LP As the Love Continues. It was produced by indie veteran John Congleton (Tegan & Sara, Angel Olsen, St. Vincent) and was recorded in Lanarkshire, a town in the band’s native Scotland. Taking inspiration from their toughest moments, the album’s title refers to a common Scottish colloquialism for hell.
“After the high of putting out As the Love Continues, the following years were personally hard for us,” Mogwai wrote in a press release. “We’ve dealt with a lot of loss and in Barry’s case a serious family illness with one his daughters. Getting back together to write and record this record felt like a refuge and with John Congleton we feel that we’ve made something special. We often hear from people that our music has helped them get through hard times in their lives and for once I think it applies to us as well.”

Mogwai have offered “Lion Rumpus” as the latest preview of The Bad Fire, following last month’s lead single “God Gets You Back.” With fuzzy, explosive guitar work, robotic vocals, and a psychedelic hue, “Lion Rumpus” reprises Mogwai’s typically dramatic, widescreen impulses. Though the song (likely) came from a place of pain, it arrives with a rather lighthearted music video featuring a Glaswegian native named Larry Wilson as he walks various dogs around New York City. As the video concludes, it shows Wilson attempting to explain who Mogwai is to various New Yorkers. Watch the video below.
The band is supporting their new album with an extensive 2025 tour. The North American run kicks off on April 7th in Washington D.C., and continues with shows in Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Boston, Toronto, Chicago, Denver, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, and many more.
