Miles Greenberg Debuts a Suite of Marble Sculptures at Salon 94

The renowned Canadian artist Miles Greenberg has unveiled a new, marble-clad exhibition at Salon 94, now on view through February 15, 2025. Best known for his endurance-based live performances, the show marks the first U.S. exhibition dedicated solely to Greenberg’s sculptural practice.

Entitled Desire Path, the exhibition transforms the gallery space into a dance of Carrara marble sculptures. The pieces were created by digitally mapping bodies in motion during Greenberg’s 2023 performance Fountain II, first presented at New York’s Pace Gallery. Using a hacked 3D scanner that limits its ability to self-correct, the artist captures fleeting moments of motion. The resulting scans are machine-carved into pink, black and white marble, then hand-finished by the artist.

The works explore the intersection of performance and permanence, meditating on time and its preservation. Drawing on the romanticism of classical sculpture and the precision of modern architecture, the Marina Abramović protégée translates his understanding of energy and movement into tactile form.

“A ‘desire path’ is an unofficial route that occurs naturally when people intuitively walk the same trajectory many times over; it’s often about finding the shortest distance between two points,” Greenberg explains. “There’s something deeply sensual about the idea behind a desire path – the act of building on someone else’s intuition, blindly; you leave behind the memory of your touch and a stranger then remembers you through their own body, again and again, until the shape of the world around you changes, like a river carving through a continent.’

Alongside the sculptures are new 9-hour-long video based works of the artist’s recent performances, such as SEBASTIAN (2023) which debuted at the 60th Biennale Arte in Venice and RESPAWN (2024) from the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto.
