Midem to Return in 2023 After City of Cannes Purchases Brand

Midem to Return in 2023 After City of Cannes Purchases Brand

The municipality of Cannes has officially purchased the Midem brand from RX France, according to a release from the office of Cannes mayor David Lisnard.

The city of Cannes will now host a “new” Midem, slated to take place at the beginning of 2023 at Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. The event will focus on technological innovations and feature concerts throughout the city for residents and visitors.

Making Midem an official Cannes event dovetails with the city’s strategy of developing an entire chain of “audiovisual creation” in Cannes.

“Organized since 1967 in Cannes, the International Market for Records and Music Publishing [MIDEM] was the largest annual global event devoted to the music scene,” said Lisnard in a statement. “In order to rediscover this emblematic event on the Cannes calendar, the City of Cannes is taking over the Midem so that it once again becomes the essential meeting place for music professionals from all over the world. Maintaining this show in Cannes represents an economic challenge for local employment and attractiveness for the destination.”

Midem took place in Cannes for 55 years before its organizers, RX France, shut it down in December. The cancellation was due in part to the lasting COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the 2020 and 2021 editions to go digital-only. Midem, for years, was the premiere destination and meeting ground for international labels and distributors to make global deals in person over the course of a week. At its height, it attracted more than 10,000 attendees every year, but changes in the industry, coupled with the advent of streaming, brought those numbers substantially down in recent years.

When RX announced the conference was going to shutter in December, it also hinted that conversations were advanced with the city of Cannes to purchase the Midem brand. According to the City of Cannes statement, the acquisition of Midem was granted at the initial price of €10,000 ($10,845) excluding tax, plus an additional sum equal to the average gross operating surplus generated by any Midem events to be organized in 2023 and 2024.
