Atmosphere has enlisted Aesop Rock and the late MF DOOM for the new collab, “Barcade.”
The cut arrives with an accompanying visual that follows a video game hero facing different types of bosses — one of them being DOOM’s iconic mask as an intergalactic spaceship. “Barcade” is part of Atmosphere’s latest release Word?, which also features the likes of Evidence, Muja Messiah, Musab, Nino Bless, Nikki Jean, Anwar HighSign, BlackLiq, Sa-Roc, Haphduzn and Lateef the Truthspeaker.
In an interview with HipHopDX, Sean “Slug” Daley touched on the realization that DOOM’s contribution for “Barcade” could have been the last verse the late rapper recorded. “That was really intense for me. And by no means were me and him super close friends, but whenever we saw each other, it was on,” he said, adding that he found out about DOOM’s death the same time as everyone did. “I didn’t even know until New Year’s Eve when the public announcement came out. I was doing the math, because he gave me that verse and was like, ‘I’m good. I like it.’ And that was in October.”
Slug added, “He was one of the last people to give me a part for the album. And so when he gave it to me and then when I did the math and they said that he died on Halloween, I was just like, ‘Yo he gave me this verse right before he died.’”
