Metallica honor collaborator Marianne Faithfull upon news of her passing

Metallica have paid tribute to Marianne Faithfull, who passed away on Thursday (January 30th) at the age of 78. The British singer famously contributed vocals to the metal band’s classic song “The Memory Remains” from 1997’s ReLoad album.

On Instagram, Metallica shared a gallery of photos of the various band members with Faithfull, along with the following message from drummer Lars Ulrich:

“Thank you, Marianne… For the good times, For your kindness, For the great stories, For your fearlessness … And the biggest Thank You and Fuck Yeah for your incredible and unique contribution to our music, and for always being so willing to join us in performing it … and partake in the ensuing shenanigans! Rest in Peace – Lars”

Faithfull was already a legendary singer when she recorded “The Memory Remains” with Metallica, having previously collaborated with The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, as well as released a number of solo albums by that time.

In 1998, Metallica frontman James Hetfield told CMJ New Music Monthly of Faithfull, “She had that voice that we were looking for, that weathered, smellin’-the-cigarettes-on-the-CD kinda voice. And I thought, ‘Fuck, that’s exactly what we need for this part.’”

In addition to appearing on the recorded version of the song, Faithfull also performed the tune alongside Metallica on a December 1997 episode of Saturday Night Live, and again during one of their 30th anniversary shows in San Francisco in 2011.
