Mercedes-AMG has unveiled what it’s saying is its most “innovative and powerful” SL ever — the SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE. This latest example of the iconic SL brings with it a handcrafted AMG 4.0L V8 Biturbo engine, paired with an AMG Electric Drive Unit, which together produce 805 hp and up to 1,047 lb-ft of torque.
While raw power is certainly the focal point of the SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE, it also boasts a suite of sophisticated features, including active roll stabilization, fully variable all-wheel drive and rear-axle steering, all coming standard alongside a ceramic high-performance composite brake system.
Thanks to its immediate response to the electric drive on the rear axle, the vehicle is capable of a 0-60 mph time of just 2.8 seconds. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with standard AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension, offering a versatile range of driving dynamics, from comfort to high agility.
“The SL has always been an icon in the Mercedes-Benz portfolio,” said Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, adding “The new SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE, with its innovative technology, is the most powerful SL, transferring this legendary status into the future.”
Notably, the AMG high-performance battery found in the SL is inspired by Formula 1, acting as a nod and testament to the brand’s racing heritage. It offers both high power density and fast energy draw, enhancing the roadster’s overall performance. The direct cooling system of the battery ensures consistent temperature, a crucial aspect for optimal power delivery and longevity.
The vehicle’s operating strategy, derived from the hybrid powerpack of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 race cars, guarantees that maximum propulsion is always available on demand. This is complemented by the eight AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs, ranging from “Electric” to “RACE,” which can be adjusted to various driving parameters to suit the driver’s preferences.
As for design, the vehicle features exclusive exterior elements, including a unique charging port door, a red-highlighted “SL 63 S” model badge and distinctive twin tailpipe trims. Additionally, the MANUFAKTUR program offers extensive customization options, allowing owners to further personalize their vehicles.
Inside, the roadster is quickly recognizable as having a driver-focused cockpit, offering a blend of dynamic support and comfort. The MBUX infotainment system provides hybrid-specific displays and features, for seamless interaction between the driver and the vehicle’s advanced systems.
While details on price and availability have not yet been shared at the time of writing, the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE is expected to arrive at dealerships sometime in 2024, with more information to be shared via official channels.
