Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev has won the 2021 US Open, ending world number one Novak Djokovic‘s calendar slam dream.
Taking home the victory across three straight sets over two hours, Medvedev triumphed over the Serbian player 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to achieve his first major title in the sport. Aside from his own personal victory, the 25-year-old also ended a historic run and attempt at a calendar slam by Djokovic, who has won all three of the other Grand Slams this year: the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. The last man to win all four in a calendar year was Rod Laver back in 1969.
Djokovic’s loss also prevented the 34-year-old from winning his 21st Grand Slam title, a record no other player in the history of the sport has achieved. Standing at 20 titles, he remains tied with the current record also held by Swiss legend Roger Federer and Spaniard Rafael Nadal, both of whom earlier pulled out of the US Open due to injuries.
Elsewhere in the world of sports, Anderson Silva has knocked out Tito Ortiz in just 81 seconds.
