McLaren has now confirmed previous rumors by officially announcing that it’ll be joining Formula E in 2023.
The decision marks yet another expansion in the British automaker’s racing division, which currently encompasses Formula 1, IndyCar and Extreme E. Instead of creating its own team from scratch, however, McLaren will be acquiring the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team, absorbing the reigning ABB FIA Formula E World Championship team into its roster. Its debut into the all-electric motorsport circuit will also coincide with Formula E’s introduction of its Gen3 racer, which the organization has dubbed its “fastest, most efficient and sustainable race car yet.”
“As with all forms of the sport we participate in, Formula E has racing at the centre but will be strategically, commercially and technically additive to McLaren Racing overall,” McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown said in a statement. “It is also satisfying to provide a home for the class-leading Formula E team that Mercedes has built, which will become a fully-fledged part of the McLaren Racing family. While run separately to our F1 and IndyCar teams, Formula E complements and builds out our EV racing program alongside Extreme E.”
