MC Serch is selling 100% of his shares in Nas‘ catalog.
As confirmed to AllHipHop, the 3rd Bass artist’s stake in Nas’ catalog includes the seminal albums Illmatic from 1994 and It Was Written from 1996 — the Brooklyn rapper’s first two albums that Serch also executive produced. “I have decided to sell all of the rights, including the global rights,” Serch shared, but did not divulge the amount the shares are going for. “I started conversations with several companies a few months ago. For 27 years, it has provided my family through good times and bad. Now it’s time for a new chapter.”
Illmatic and It Was Written are both widely regarded as some of the best hip-hop albums to ever be released; Illmatic was not initially a commercial success but eventually went on to be lauded as the record that revived rap in New York, even going on to join the National Recording Registry for preservation in 2021. It Was Written, on the other hand, remains to be Nas’ most commercially-successful album, selling at least three million copies.
Elsewhere in music, Kanye West claims that Watch the Throne 2 is coming soon.
