Mattel sued after Wicked dolls list adult film website on packaging

Mattel sued after Wicked dolls list adult film website on packaging

Mattel has been sued after the packaging for its Wicked dolls mistakenly listed the url of an adult entertainment website instead of the official domain, court documents have revealed (via Variety).

A South Carolina mother is launching a class action lawsuit against Mattel claiming “emotional distress.” The plaintiff says she purchased a Wicked doll before the toy company’s recall and her daughter, who is a minor, was exposed to “hardcore, full on nude pornographic images depicting actual intercourse” upon looking up the link on the packaging.

Further noting that the plaintiff and her daughter were “horrified,” the lawsuit claims she kept evidence of the “inexcusable error.” The mother also alleges Mattel did not offer a refund and thus she is owed damages.

The merchandise for the theatrical adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as the witches Glinda and Elphaba, went on sale in early November ahead of its release in theaters on November 22nd. Instead of listing the film’s official website (wickedmovie.com), the packaging had the adult website wicked.com printed on the back.

This was not a one-off issue, with hundreds of boxes listed on eBay with the same error. Mattel responded by issuing an apology and pulling the Wicked dolls from retailers, but according to the lawsuit, the damage was already done.
