Manchester United are nearing an agreement to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, Goal reports.
The Red Devils have already negotiated personal terms with the centre-back, and they are now in discussions over the transfer fee with Los Blancos.
It was recently reported that the club had failed with an opening bid worth €45 million for Varane, but they still appear on track to sign him.
The Red Devils continue to have a good relationship with the Madrid giants, and it is claimed that a fee between €45-€55m could seal the deal.
Sportslens view:
United are determined to land Varane this summer, having previously failed to sign him on two separate occasions in 2011 and 2019.
With under 12 months left on his contract, Los Blancos are also open to sanctioning his sale rather than losing him for free next year.
It was recently reported that Los Blancos president Florentino Perez holds grudges with United for the failed David de Gea move in 2015.
However, it appears that has not affected the relationship between the clubs, and the Red Devils are ‘expected’ to sign the Frenchman soon.
Varane would provide an upgrade for United at the heart of the defence and boost their chances of competing for the Premier League title.
It was previously suggested that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer prefers a left-footed option to accompany Harry Maguire in central defence.
The plans seem to have been scrapped. It is justifiable, considering they wouldn’t want to miss out on a world-class defender of Varane’s calibre.
Varane, who is a four-time Champions League winner, looks set to leave Madrid after a decade, making 360 appearances in all competitions.
