Mac DeMarco to Release Instrumental LP ‘Five Easy Hot Dogs’ Later This Month

Mac DeMarco will be returning with a new album in just a few weeks. The forthcoming record, entitled Five Easy Hot Dogs, is a collection of instrumental recordings the singer made throughout his time spent traveling across the U.S. and Canada.

Each of the 14 songs on Five Easy Hot Dogs is named after the corresponding city in which it was recorded and the tracklist is reflective of the chronological order they were made. DeMarco says that he began his roadtrip in the Bay Area following a concert in January of last year.

His plan was essentially to stay in motels, hotels and simply in people’s houses and to record in all of these various settings. The singer said he traveled with his guitar, bass, drum kit, Model D synth, TX7 keyboard, stands and cabling and a few mics.

“The plan was to start driving north, and not go home to Los Angeles until I was done with a record,” DeMarco said. “Kind of like being on tour, except there weren’t any shows, and I’d just be burning money.”

After his show in the Bay Area, DeMarco headed to Utah, where he ultimately spent one night before fleeing back to Los Angeles. Later tracks on the LP are called “Victoria,” “Vancouver” and “Chicago.”

“The nature of ripping around and recording and traveling in this manner doesn’t lend well to sitting around and planning or thinking about what it was that I was setting out to do,” he said of the process. “I didn’t ever have a sound in mind, or a theme or anything, I would just start recording.”

Mac DeMarco’s Five Easy Hot Dogs is out for streaming on January 20, followed by a vinyl release on May 12.

In other music news, Metro Boomin dropped the original cut of Drake and 21 Savage’s “Knife Talk.”
