“Love Island” super fans, we’re going to let you in on a little secret: you can get your hands on the exact outfits that host Laura Whitmore has worn throughout the series. And it’s all for a good cause.
Around 200 million tonnes of clothes end up in landfill every single year in the UK. So, in a bid to beat the fast fashion crisis, “Love Island” committed to dressing its presenter and contestants exclusively in secondhand clothing from eBay. And now, after being worn on screen in Mallorca, some of these preloved items are being resold in a public auction on the show’s sponsor’s site. So, whether you’ve had your head turned by Whitmore’s denim jumpsuit or have got your eye on one of her vintage floral dresses, you better act fast.
After launching at 5pm on Thursday 14 July, exactly 53 items are up for grabs on the eBay x Love Island auction hub’s Laura Whitmore edit right now. So, there’s enough choice to ensure that you’re shopping sustainably and buying a piece that will remain your type on paper forever. Every single penny raised will be donated to Oxfam, and the auction is being hosted by preloved seller and secondhand fashion champion Reskinned.
Whitemore herself is a “big fan of pre-loved” fashion, having volunteered in a charity shop as a teenager to do her bit and “get first dibs on the pre-loved gems that came in”. “I’m thrilled to see so many people joining the pre-love hype in recent months. From high-street favourites to dream designers, I’ve selected this edit of items on eBay to demonstrate how unique and versatile pre-loved can be. I really hope that there is something which fits your type on paper, so you can look seriously good all whilst doing your bit this summer,” she said.
The starting prices were set at 99p per item, but “Love Island” devotees have already raised the prices with some generous bids. Whitmore’s Reiss Green Tie Top is racking up impressive bids already, and the asking price is sitting at £105 at the time of writing. Other items up on offer are the TV star’s green dress from Ganni, and her vintage spice girls T-Shirt. The items aren’t too shabby either, with pieces from high end brands such as Versace, The Kooples, Moschino and MiuMiu making an appearance in the auction.
This auction is just one part of eBay and Love Island’s mission to make the show and the fashion industry more sustainable. At the start of July, fans were able to purchase the actual clothes that the Islanders wore in the villa. From Ekin-Su’s blue Hervé Leger body con dress and Gemma’s gold sequin House of CB number to Luca’s Luca’s Palm Angels x Smiley Collection Black Bomber and Davide’s Sandro Shirt, everything sold in the name of charity.
You might have missed out on the Islander’s auction, but the seven-day Laura Whitmore auction is still up and running until 5pm on 21 July. So, you’ve still got time to bid on your very own piece of “Love Island” memorabilia.
