When Louis Vuitton first released his luggage goods back in 1854, little did he know the cultural impact his brand would have nearly 200 years later. To honor his legacy, the French luxury label will unveil a new exhibition in Los Angeles dubbed 200 Trunks, 200 Visionaries.
The traveling show debuted last year just outside Paris and will now occupy a space nearby LV’s new menswear store on 420 North Rodeo Drive. The event is made to commemorate the bicentennial year since Louis’ birth in 1821 through 200 specially designed trunks from close friends and various figures across the creative world. Supreme, Peter Marino, LEGO, Alex Israel, Nigo, Fornasetti and PLAYLAB Inc. are some of the many tapped for the project.
Each participant was tasked with a metaphorical blank canvas measuring 50 x 50 x 100 centimeters — approximately the same dimensions of the original trunk that Louis conceived in the 1850s — resulting in 200 wildly inventive trunks set in an immersive multi-layered exhibition that seeks to translate the dreams, desires, concepts and artistic modes of expression that LV has sparked over the years.
“This project has always been about creativity – a real tribute to Louis’s ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit. We get to see how such a cross-section of talents answered the same brief while also taking a moment to appreciate the man himself,” said Faye McLeod, Louis Vuitton’s Visual Image Director in a statement.
200 Trunks, 200 Visionaries will open to the public tomorrow, July 29 and be on view until September 6. All the trunks on display will be auctioned by Sotheby’s later in the year with 100% of proceeds being donated to charity.
Elsewhere, artist Anouk Kruithof compiled thousands of YouTube clips to create a dance-themed exhibition.
