Cass McCombs has shared a new song about the loss of a close friend. “Belong to Heaven” was produced by Ariel Rechtshaid, and it features Danielle Haim on drums and backing vocals; Shahzad Ismaily on bass, keys and piano; Frank LoCastro on keys; and Buddy Ross on hammond organ. The Chaplin sisters recorded additional vocals for the track, which you can listen to below.
McCombs has worked with Rechtshaid on three of his previous albums: 2009’s Catacombs, as well as Wit’s End, and Humor Risk, both from 2011. The singer-songwriter’s most recent LP, Tip of the Sphere, arrived in 2019. Since issuing that record, he has released a book of poetry, shared his solo single “The Wine of Lebanon,” and enlisted a string of collaborators for new music. He’s shared new recordings with Wynonna Judd, Steve Gunn, and released a reworked version of his 2009 song “Don’t Vote” with Angel Olsen, Bob Weir, and Noam Chomsky.
