Lily-Rose Depp portrays a pop star seeking a second chance at stardom in the new trailer for HBO’s new drama, The Idol.
Soundtracked to Britney Spears’s “Gimme More,” the video opens with Jocelyn (Depp) on the set of a photo shoot. It then cuts to an unnamed character – played by Troye Sivan – asking when the last time there was a truly “nasty, bad pop girl,” foreshadowing the rebrand and return of pop star Jocelyn.
Her redemption arc, however, isn’t a solo project. After meeting Jocelyn on the dance floor, nightclub owner Tedros (The Weeknd) starts a relationship with the singer and makes her return to the music industry his own personal project.
“After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by Tedros, a nightclub impresario with a sordid past,” The Idol’s synopsis reads. “Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?”
Co-created by The Weeknd, Reza Fahim and Euphoria mastermind Sam Levinson, the show, which has been subject to controversy, will be premiering at the Cannes Film Festival next month. It’ll roll out to HBO Max just a few weeks later on June 4.
Alongside Depp and The Weeknd, the star-studded cast is composed of Jane Adams, Jennie Ruby Jane, Dan Levy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Eli Roth, Hari Nef, Mike Dean, Moses Sumney, Rachel Sennott, Ramsey and more.
