On Lil Wayne‘s second single of 2023, the hip-hop legend tapped into one of fellow musical icon Missy Elliott‘s infamous beats. On “Kat Food”, Weezy samples Elliott’s infamous “Work It” and spits nearly five minutes of bars.
The rapper took to Instagram just a day before the song’s release to surprise fans with the announcement – which takes the form of a “Missing Kat” flyer.
Wayne proves that no matter how sporadic his releases are at this point in his career – his last one being February’s DMX feature “Kant Nobody” – he’s still one of the greatest lyricists on the hip-hop scene. Stocked with cat-centric bars and his signature witty wordplay, “Kat Food” is a classic Tunechi listen. He steps over the bouncy beat with a high-energy chorus:
“Cat hanging out that catsuit, ooh, Serena / Woah, I eat her, like, hyena / Come here, girl, I got that cat food, ooh, Purina / Ooh, Purina, it’s wet, Katrina / Cat hangin’ out that catsuit, ooh, that cheetah / Ooh, I eat her like, hyena / Come here, girl, I got that cat food, ooh, Purina.”
As revealed by MTV on socials, Wayne will be debuting the song live at the VMAs later this month. The rapper will return to the awards show stage for the first time in a decade to premiere “Kat Food.”
“Kat Food” is now streaming on Spotify and Apple Music. Watch the track’s visualizer above.
