If sports can be equated to a dance, LeRoy Neiman painted the dynamism in every movement. Globally recognized for helping bridge the gap between the two often disparate industries, Neiman elevated sports posters in the second half of the 20th Century at a time when cheap low brow caricatures were the norm.
We’re approaching the final month to see an exhibition of posters by the late artist, titled “What’s The Score? The Posters of LeRoy Neiman” at New York’s Poster House. Displayed across the gallery are numerous artworks he created announcing boxing matches, marathons, automobile races, golf tournaments, tennis championships, football games, concerts and five Olympic Games.
By injecting Pop Art techniques with Impressionistic brushstrokes, Neiman documented some of sports greatest moments through vibrant hits of color that captured the spirit of each event. Curated by Angelina Lippert, the posters on display were kindly donated by the LeRoy Neiman and Jane Byrne Neiman Foundation and are currently on view at Poster House until March 27, 2022.
Also on view, Kumkum Fernando turns found materials into mystical sculptures.
