The NBA has tapped legends across basketball and hip-hop to reflect on the relationship between the two cultures in a mini documentary entitled There Is No NBA Without Hip Hop, debuting just after the start of the 2023/24 season.

At just under seven minutes, the doc kicks off with an appearance from Kurtis Blow discussing the impact of his 1984 hit single “Basketball.”

“I remember that song being the foundation of hip-hop,” Carmelo Anthony says.

The rest of the doc features appearances from icons such as Lil Wayne and LeBron James, who all speak on their mutual love for both the sport and musical genre. The doc particularly centers on how hip-hop found its way in the NBA beginning in the 1990s.

Additional appearances in the video come from Steph Curry and Shaquille O’Neal, as well as LL COOL J, T.I., Jadakiss, Big Boi, Grandmaster Flash and Quavo.
