Over the course of the last 60 years, Dr. Jane Goodall traversed the rainforests of what is today, Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park, to observe the lives of chimpanzees. She uncovered that these distant relatives of ours are not as primitive as we might have thought — that they too were capable of making tools, displaying emotion, and carrying personal traits that continue to amaze researchers to this day.
To celebrate her extraordinary life, the Natural History Museum of LA County will bring the “Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall” experience to the West Coast in November. The exhibition has toured from the National Geographic Museum in Washington to Chicago’s Field Museum and is a truly interactive experience. Visitors will first be introduced to British primatologist’s work through a multiscreen experience, along with an intricately built replica of her research tent that you can explore — envisioning yourself in the shoes of Dr. Goodall as she contemplated her daily findings. Additionally, a hologram of Dr. Goodall will recount to visitors of the many lessons she learned while living amongst the chimpanzees and prompts the audience to recount how they too can foster an eco-conscious and sustainable future.

“As we emerge from the past year and continue on a path towards healing, Dr. Goodall’s life and work provide an unparalleled example of how curiosity can lead to environmental stewardship with tremendous impact, said Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, president and director of the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County in a past statement.
The exhibition is produced in connection with the National Geographic Society and the Jane Goodall Institute and will open on November 7 at the Natural History Museum of LA County. Tickets will range from $8 to $17 USD, while kids under two years of age can enter free of charge.
