Kylie Minogue’s ‘Disco’ Blasts to No. 1 In U.K.

Kylie Minogue is queen of the U.K.’s album chart, and she sets some impressive records along the way.

The Australian pop icon’s 15th studio album Disco (BMG) dances in at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart, her eighth leader and third in as many years.

Earlier in the week, Disco was locked in a tight race with Little Mix’s Confetti (RCA). In the end, Kylie’s album blew away the competition with 55,000 chart sales, the biggest opening week of 2020 so far. That sum includes 13,500 copies sold on vinyl, the Official Charts Company reports.

It’s Kylie’s biggest opening week in 10 years, since 2010’s Aphrodite, and it places the Melburnian in a league of her own.

Minogue is the first female artist to score a No. 1 on the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart in five consecutive decades (the ‘80s, ‘90s, ‘00s, ‘10s and ‘20s.)

Little Mix come in at No. 2 with Confetti, the most-streamed album of the cycle. It’s the pop group’s sixth consecutive Top 5 LP.

There’s another record-setter in the upper tier of the chart as Shirley Bassey’s final album I Owe It All To You (Decca) starts at No. 5. According to the OCC, Bassey becomes the first female artist to claim a Top 40 album in seven consecutive decades, a feat that dates back to her first entry in 1961 with Fabulous Shirley Bassey, peaking at No. 12.

Also flying high on debut is British rapper Dutchavelli, whose debut mixtape Dutch From The 5th (Parlophone) bows at No. 8.

Over on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, Ariana Grande locks up top spot for a third week with “Positions” (Republic Records), while Internet Money’s “Lemonade” (Tenthousand Projects) featuring Gunna and Toliver holds at No. 2 and Little Mix’s “Sweet Melody” climbs 12-3.

Grande also has the week’s highest new entry as “POV” starts at No. 22.
