After taking over New York’s The Journal Gallery Gallery last month, Kenny Scharf will be presenting the I’m Baaack solo exhibition in Tokyo.
It’s been 30 years since Scharf has shown a body of new artworks in a solo showcase, especially at a Japanese gallery. The exhibition will take place across NANZUKA UNDERGROUND and Sogetsu Hall starting June 10. At Sogetsu Hall, an additional installation featuring a remodeled Cadillac will also be displayed at the site’s Isamu Noguchi-designed rock garden.
I’m Baaack consists of 23 sculptures and paintings, most of them created between 2022 and 2023. As usual, Scharf’s signature color schemes and pop surrealist motifs make a return in this new body of works. In the framed paintings, shiny cartoon-esque figures are decked across brightly-hued bases in various explosion-like spectacles.
Kenny Scharf’s new oeuvre of artworks will be viewable at NANZUKA UNDERGROUND from June 10 – July 9. Synonymously, a selection of his new works will also be displayed at Sogetsu Hall between June 10 – June 30.
