Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss recently appeared for an interview with The Verge to discuss their thoughts on the new Unreal Engine 5 game The Matrix Awakens.
The conversation touched upon a breadth of topics including the metaverse, doing a reimagined Matrix video game based on the films, cryptocurrency, their upcoming The Matrix Resurrections film, VR pornography and more.
In The Matrix Awakens. Reeves and Moss play ultrarealistic digital versions of themselves. The duo found it “interesting,” and “trippy,” leading to a conversation of what’s real and what’s not, and rights to digital IPs. Reeves joked that they could just stay home and just have their avatars do the work, and told a story of how some of the younger generations simply don’t care if it’s “real” or not.
“I feel like it’s the first time in a long time that the real world is almost ahead of our science fiction,” said Reeves. He also commented on the rise of the metaverse saying, “Can we just not have metaverse be invented by Facebook? The concept of the metaverse is way older than that,” and told the interviewer that the crypto he owns, a friend of his bought for him a while back.
For their upcoming film, The Matrix Resurrections, the duo revealed that they were immediately interested when asked to return, and promise, an immersive journey filled with romance, action, and humor. When asked whether the film is a predictor for the future, Reeves said “I think the films have always been a tool that you could use. The Matrix tool. To think about the world you live in, to think about the world itself and what are the systems…I think Resurrections is definitely a tool that we can look at today and will probably take us into tomorrow.”
Take a look at the full interview above. The Matrix Awakens is now available on the Sony PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X/S, and The Matrix Resurrections is set to premiere on December 22.
In other news, Keanu Reeves is interested in returning as John Constantine.
