KAWS has unveiled a new 18-ft sculpture in front of the iconic Rockefeller Center in New York City. The bronze built statue is entitled, “SHARE” and features his iconic “COMPANION” character holding a miniature pink “BFF.” The work is presented as part of his ongoing “WHAT PARTY” exhibition which runs until September at the Brooklyn Museum.
This latest sculptural piece arrives at a space that is perhaps one of New York’s most recognizable locations. When speaking on his approach to the piece, KAWS said in a statement, “The verticality of all the architecture and visiting Rockefeller Center as a kid and looking up and being overwhelmed, I wanted a sculpture that could relate to those feelings.” As the pandemic has forced the world indoors, “SHARE” reflects the fear and isolation we’ve all felt, with the “BFF” figure bringing us a sense of comfort we all seek.
“With the city opening up again and up coming out of the last year that we did, I feel like it’s a really important time to have public art,” KAWS added.
Witness KAWS’ new “SHARE” sculpture at the Rockefeller Center after you peep the new show at the Brooklyn Museum, which is on view until September 5.
