Kate Bush has made a rare statement acknowledging the resurgence of her 1985 single “Running Up That Hill.” The song has become wildly popular in recent days, following its prominence in Netflix’s latest season of Stranger Things. “You might’ve heard that the first part of the fantastic, gripping new series of Stranger Things has recently been released on Netflix,” Bush wrote on her website. “It features the song, ‘Running Up That Hill’ which is being given a whole new lease of life by the young fans who love the show—I love it too!”
Bush continued: “Because of this, ‘Running Up That Hill’ is charting around the world and has entered the UK chart at No. 8. It’s all really exciting! Thanks very much to everyone who has supported the song. I wait with bated breath for the rest of the series in July.”
“Running Up That Hill” originally appeared on Bush’s lauded fifth album Hounds of Love, which she self-produced and composed largely with a Fairlight CMI—a groundbreaking digital sampling synthesizer. The track plays a key role and repeats as a motif throughout the current season of Stranger Things; it is also the favorite song of the character Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink).
Since the song appeared in Stranger Things, “Running Up That Hill” has gone viral, with streams multiplying by the thousands over the past week. The single was also covered by Kim Petras.
