Kanye West Wants Final Cut Over New ‘Jeen-Yuhs’ Documentary: “Open the Edit Room Immediately”

Kanye West Wants Final Cut Over New ‘Jeen-Yuhs’ Documentary: “Open the Edit Room Immediately”

Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, wants the final say on how he’ll be represented in Jeen-Yuhs, a three-part documentary about his life and career. The documentary is scheduled to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, followed by a release on Netflix in February.

In an Instagram post on Friday, Ye “kindly” requested editorial control over the project.

“I’m going to say this kindly for the last time,” Ye wrote. “I must get final edit and approval on this doc before it releases on Netflix. Open the edit room immediately so I can be in charge of my own image. Thank you in advance.”

Jeen-Yuhs was shot and edited by filmmakers Coodie Simmons and Chike Ozah, who simply go by Coodie and Chike, over the course of 20 years and contains several hours of never-before-scene footage. The film charts Ye’s rise, beginning as a rap producer in Chicago, and hones in on events such as his 2020 presidential run and the tragic death of his mother.

Ye is listed as a producer on Jeen-Yuhs but was not given a say in its final cut.

“I said, ‘Dude, you have to trust me.’ And he did, 100%,” Coodie said in a recent interview with Variety. “Mind you, when his team and the business-people have gotten involved, they’re of course going to have their say. But I needed to tell this story. It’s not about making Kanye likable or not. The footage doesn’t lie. What makes the film special is that it’s not something definitive; it’s his journey through my vision.”

Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy is lined up to be shown at Sundance on January 23. It will be released on Netflix in three installments beginning on February 16.

In other music news, 2 Chainz dropped a visual for the new track “Pop Music” featuring Moneybagg Yo and BeatKing.
