Jonas Wood Unveils New Gagosian Exhibition in Hong Kong

Jonas Wood has unveiled a suite of new work at Gagosian’s Hong Kong outpost. Known for creating intimate compositions that explore his fascination with sports, home interiors and landscapes, the Los Angeles-based artist was inspired for this new exhibition after re-encountering Polka Dot Orchid (2015), a painting he made which went on view at the Dallas Museum of Art in 2019.

This self-titled exhibition is Wood’s first in Hong Kong and focuses specifically on motifs of fruits, flowers, and houseplants. By isolating these plants on a monochromatic background, Wood curiously explores color theory, geometry, line and pattern. The latter of which was overlaid as a wallpaper throughout the gallery.

Plants have long been a study of Wood’s ever since he moved to Southern California from the East Coast. He was suprised to see the diverstiy of fauna in the southland and paints them in still lifes, like his predecessors Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, David Hockney, as way to explore abstract forms. The exhibition will be on view at Gagosian’s Hong Kong location until January 15, 2022.
