Joji Introduces Lo-Fi Sounds to His Crooning Ballads on New Album ‘Smithereens’

Joji Introduces Lo-Fi Sounds to His Crooning Ballads on New Album ‘Smithereens’

Joji has released his new album, Smithereens, out today via 88rising. Following 2020’s Nectar, the new LP hears the singer continue to evolve his distinctive style of melancholic ballads.

On tracks like “Die For You,” the singer pensively reflects on lost love, a recurring theme throughout his discography. Crooning over simple piano chords punctuated by the cymbal, Joji reveals that although she’s moved on to be happy without him in her life, he’s still willing to die for her.

The album is also home to his hit single “Glimpse of Us.” Other standouts include the somber “Before The Day Is Over” and the vibey “NIGHT RIDER,” the latter of which sees Joji experiment more with production.

Smithereens is cut into two sides: Side A marks a maturation of Joji’s introspective ballads, whereas Side B is largely produced by the singer himself and sees him venture into lo-fi, D.I.Y. sounds.
