Johnny Hardwick’s cause of death unclear due to decomposition

Johnny Hardwick's cause of death unclear due to decomposition

Medical officials are unable to determine the cause of death for King of the Hill star Johnny Hardwick due to “extensive decompositional changes” his body underwent by the time he was found, TMZ reports.

Hardwick, who voiced Dale Gribble in the beloved animated series, was found dead in his Texas home in August. According to his autopsy, he was found in the bathtub with the water running, but was not submerged. He was 100 pounds when he was found, despite standing at 5-foot-7.

The medical examiner reported no obvious signs of trauma, and said foul play was likely not involved in Hardwick’s death. Drugs were found at the scene, and a toxicology test showed a “presumptive positive test for cannabinoids,” but no further details were provided.

Hardwick got his start doing standup in Texas before he was approached by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels for King of the Hill. In addition to voicing Dale Gribble for the series’ 13-year run, Hardwick was a staff writer, story editor, and producer for the show. He won an Emmy in 1999 for Outstanding Animated Program for the latter role, and received another two nominations in the category.
