John Malkovich joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the upcoming Apple TV+ series, The New Look, which tells the story of life in Nazi-occupied France and post-WWII Europe through the lives of fashion icons Christian Dior and Coco Chanel. Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Malkovich — the legendary actor known for films like Being John Malkovich, Con Air, and Of Mice and Men — portrays Lucien Lelong, a French couturier who was a mentor of Dior (among other iconic designers). He explains his role in the show, dives into how it delves into the compromises many people had to make in order to survive, and ultimately how choices during the time were rarely easy.

“There are so few things that are really black and white,” Malkovich explains. “There are some, but life is corruption and life is compromise, and that’s a fact, and there’s no getting around that fact, and there’s no getting around that we all make accommodations with things that we really wish not to do.”

The actor goes on to consider how people of today would fare under similar circumstances and how more careful consideration of creation could stave off future mayhem. Also teased is the actor’s upcoming role in the Andrew Scott-led series Ripley. The story is familiar to Malkovich, who played the titular character in 2002’s Ripley’s Game.
