Jo Koy reflects on criticism of Golden Globes monologue: "I'd be lying if [I said] it doesn't hurt"

Jo Koy is having a tough day.

After his Golden Globes opening monologue on Sunday fell flat with the audience, the comedian addressed the negative reception on GMA3 on Monday morning. “I’d be lying if [I said] it doesn’t hurt,” Koy said of the criticism, “I hit a little moment there [during the monologue] where I was just like, ‘Ah.’ Hosting is a tough gig. Yes, I am a stand-up comic, but that hosting position is a different style.”

Though Koy mentioned he had fun and that it was a night he’d never forget, he sounded beaten down as he reflected on the evening. “It’s a tough room,” he told GMA3 co-hosts Eva Pilgrim and DeMarco Morgan. “It was a hard job. I’m not gonna lie. Getting that gig and then having the amount of time that we had to prepare, that was a crash course.”

It wasn’t the only time that Koy referenced the show’s quick turnaround from when he was hired on December 21st. During his opening monologue, after a joke about Barbie was met with little-to-no laughter, Koy quipped, “Yo, I got the gig 10 days ago. What do you want? A perfect monologue? Shut up. I wrote some of these [jokes], and they’re the ones you’re laughing at.”

Koy also addressed his joke about Taylor Swift. During the ceremony, Koy quipped that the difference between the NFL and Golden Globes is that in the Golden Globes “there are less camera shots of Taylor Swift,” referring to the oft-featured camera cuts to Taylor Swift during Kansas City Chiefs games as she cheers on her boyfriend, Travis Kelce. “It was a weird joke, I guess, but it was more on the NFL,” Koy said. “I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways, and how the [Golden] Globes didn’t have to do that… So it was more of a jab towards the NFL, but it just didn’t come out that way.”

Despite seeming deflated, Koy mentioned he was still proud of what he and his writers accomplished in 10 days time. When asked if he would host the awards show again, however, Koy didn’t look too enthused. “That’s a tough gig! I’m not gonna lie,” Koy said. “I really love the art of stand-up and it was cool that the opportunity came to me. Hosting is just a beast… and the crash course was really hard, too. I literally got the call and haven’t slept since, just trying to write something, just trying to to write what we had to write. And the guys were great. Everyone was great. It’s just… that was that night. I had an off night!”
