Jingyi Wang Travels Through a 'TIME TUNNEL' at VLAB

New York artist Jingyi Wang unveils her latest exhibition, ‘TIME TUNNEL,’ at VLAB, featuring unseen works from January 16 to February 16, 2024. Wang’s oil paintings intricately explore the interplay between nature and culture, utilizing cacti-human figures to symbolize life’s delicate balance of fragility and strength.

The exhibit’s focal point is the nostalgic ‘Time Travel’ painting, transporting viewers back to 1994 with three generations against a hometown memory backdrop. Wang’s poignant expression captures a yearning for familial warmth, encapsulated in a cactus paradise.
Beyond familial themes, Wang draws inspiration from everyday life. ‘WeChat Video Call’ provides a glimpse into virtual exploration with her mother, while ‘Hide’ illustrates the beauty of childhood through balloons and cacti, symbolizing contradictory yet coexisting relationships. ‘Into the red sunset’ envisions a united cactus future, and ‘Sunshine after storm’ reflects Wang’s nuanced outlook on life.

The ‘Childhood’ portrait series traces fashion evolution from the 1960s to the 2000s, utilizing various cactus characters to represent changing trends. Wang aims to spotlight the positive moments in life amid the constant influx of negative news, intertwining these narratives with powerful stories of women, particularly Asian women.

Jingyi Wang invites viewers to escape into the charm of life’s amusing moments, providing a much-needed respite from the relentless barrage of negativity. “TIME TUNNEL” at VLAB encapsulates Wang’s artistic vision, where cacti serve as both metaphor and muse, creating a space for reflection and connection with the subtle, intimate aspects of humanity.
