Jesse Rutherford Delves Into Hardcore As the Frontman of New Band, Valley Girl

Jesse Rutherford Delves Into Hardcore As the Frontman of New Band, Valley Girl

Over a week ago, a hardcore act named Valley Girl quietly uploaded a demo to YouTube. The four-song project spanned the songs “See No Peace,” “Pepper Spray,” “Mad Dog” and “Addicted To Suffering.”

Fans of the genre have gradually picked up on the new project, albeit without knowing who the band Valley Girl is. The credits of the demo – which, for now, can only be streamed on YouTube – solely named producer Taylor Young and drummer Colin Young. Valley Girl also credited audio engineer Oliver Roman and masterer Brad Boatright.

Taylor Young is a notable name in the hardcore space as the go-to producer for God’s Hate and Twitching Tongues, as well as the founder of the recording studio The Pit, but Valley Girl’s lead singer, however, remained a mystery.

That is until Valley Girl played the first live show in San Fernando, California as part of a six-band bill at The Midnight Hour on January 27. Jesse Rutherford, best known as the lead singer of The Neighbourhood, appeared onstage, revealing himself to be the frontman.

Although surprising, Rutherford has long been a quiet hardcore fan. Last year, he even collaborated with the industrial act HEALTH on the single “No Escape.” When it comes to Valley Girl and their demo, it seems that he wanted the music to stand for itself, rather than be linked to his name alone.
